Obituary for Armand Julian Sluiter
Armand J. Sluiter, 87, of Plano, TX, formerly of Platte, SD passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016 in Texas. Memorial Services for him and his wife, Pat will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at Platte City Cemetery.
Armand Julian Sluiter was born on June 17, 1929 to Adrian and Johanna (Pranger) Sluiter, who resided on a farm near Platte, SD. Armand attended country school until the eighth grade when he enrolled in the Platte School. Armand graduated from high school in 1947 and worked with his father on the farm. In May of 1951, Armand married Patricia Ann Heyder at the Presbyterian Church in Platte. Armand joined the U.S. Marine Corps in September of 1951 and was stationed in California. Pat joined him there in December of that year. They lived in Oceanside, CA until his discharge in September of 1953.
The couple returned to Platte for a short time and then returned to California where Armand was employed by a B.F. Goodrich store. They moved back to Platte in 1955. In 1956 Armand went to work for the State of South Dakota Department of Transportation where he was employed until he retired in 1991. Armand and Pat lived in Platte until May of 2013 when they moved to Plano, TX and into Sunrise Senior Living.
In November 1956 daughter, Jody was born and then in 1961, daughter, Tammy was born. The girls both attended Platte School, with Jody graduating in 1975 and Tammy in 1980.
Armand was a member of the Olive Presbyterian Church for over 65 years, having become a member in 1951. He was active in the Church and served as Elder and Financial Secretary. He joined the South Dakota National Guard in 1956 and retired from the Guard, after serving 26 years. He was a member of Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115 and served on the school board for six years.
Grateful for having shared in Armand’s life: his wife of 65 years, Pat of Plano, TX; two daughters: Jody (Jim) Whitesel of Frisco, TX and Tammy (Randy) Woehl of Kansas City, MO; two granddaughters: Kala DeHaan-Hill (Tim) of Plano, TX and Bethany DeHaan (Jonathon Allen) of Santa Monica, CA; two grandsons: Taylor Woehl (Kelley Heatley) of Golden, CO and Jordan Woehl of Manhattan, KS; two great grandsons: Brayden James Hill (Kala) and Theodore Jon Woehl (Taylor); a sister, Audrey Sluiter (Charlie Jones) of San Francisco, CA; two nephews: Kent Sluiter and Shane Sluiter; and a niece, Shari (Sluiter) Fowlds.
Armand was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Johanna Sluiter; two brothers: Floyd Sluiter and Jack Sluiter; and twin Woehl grandsons.
A family memorial service was held at Sunrise Senior Living in Plano, TX on Monday, June 27, 2016.
