Donna Jean Jones (Sylvia)
Donna Jean Jones, 84, of Platte, SD, formerly of Geddes, SD passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Platte Care Center Avera. Graveside Services will be held at 3:30 P.M. Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Geddes with Pastor D. Wayne Huber officiating.
Donna Jean Jones was born on November 25, 1932 to Ray and Rebekah Jane (Colwell) Jones. She grew up in Geddes, SD, attended grade school and graduated from Geddes High School in 1950. She was very intelligent. In high school she participated in Band (playing the clarinet), Pep Band, Instrumental Ensemble, Chorus (soloist), Glee Club and Girls Physical Education, as well as being a Girls Stater, DAR Representative and Class Officer. In the fall of her senior year, on October 6, 1949, she was elected Homecoming Queen.
On August 5, 1960 Donna Jean was united in marriage to John Sylvia in Salisbury, Massachusetts. They moved back to Geddes in 1967 where she and John ran the Geddes Café until 1974. She joined the United Methodist Church in Geddes in 1990 where she was an active member of the Ave Pearl Circle and the United Methodist Women. She also sang in the church choir.
She later became a resident of the Platte Care Center. She enjoyed singing the old hymns and loved her cats and dogs.
Donna Jean is survived by her four children: Jerry (Linda) Cornman, Joanie Campbell, Diana Smith and Connie Cornman-Arets; along with her good friend, Brenda Hermanek.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John (1996); a son, Terry; and her parents.
