Obituary for Ruth Guindon (Markhardt)

Ruth Guindon (Markhardt)
Ruth Jane Guindon, 84, of Plankinton, SD passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Plankinton. A Committal Service will follow at Mizpah Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 6, 2017 with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.

Ruth Jane Markhardt was born on January 29, 1933 in White Lake, SD to Charles and Minnie (Bogenhagen) Markhardt. She grew up in the area and graduated from White Lake High School.

On September 23, 1955, Ruth was united in marriage to Donald F. Guindon at Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. They made their home on a farm north of Plankinton, SD for many years. They were blessed with five children: Martin (Wendy) Guindon of Pierre, SD, Curtis (Kathy) Guindon of Plankinton, SD, Russell Guindon (Heidi Chlarson) of Carson City, NV, Karla (Jerry) Podhradsky of Brandon, SD and Cory (Cyndi) Guindon of Chandler, AZ.

In 1969 they moved into town where they purchased the bowling alley – renaming it Harbor Lanes, because harbor is a place of gathering. For 17 years many meals, cups of coffee, bowling tournaments and stories were shared with locals and visitors.

Ruth was a member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Country Red Hatters and Senior Citizens. Ruth enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends. Family gatherings involved lots of great food, competitive card games, many stories and lots of laughter.

Grateful for sharing her life are: her children; nine grandchildren: Derek Guindon, Kyanna (Ryan) Huff, Brittany Guindon (fiancé, Andru Meiners) and Allison Guindon, Michaela and Stephanie Podhradsky, Parker Guindon, Dr. Melanie (Jason Scott) Andersen-Scott and Tyson Andersen; five great-grandchildren: Kristofer Guindon, Jenalee, Lilyanna and Tyson Huff and Finn Meiners; her sister, Lorraine (Oliver) Hanten of White Lake, SD; two sisters-in-law: Annie Markhardt of White Lake, SD and Ann Wagner of York, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Don (Jan. 1, 1998); her parents; four brothers; five sisters; two sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ruth’s honor may be directed to: Dougherty Hospice House, PO Box 5045, Sioux Falls, SD 57103.
