Viola Grace Noteboom was born on July 6, 1930, in rural Harrison, SD, to Gerrit and Cora (Streelman) Noteboom. She developed her passion for education early, as a student. After graduating from Corsica High School in 1948, and following a session of summer school, she began her teaching career in the rural school system that fall. Viola was married to John B. Vander Tuin on Christmas 1951 in an afternoon double wedding with her sister, Doris and Dennis Markus. She continued teaching in rural, one-room schools; and then the Platte Christian School, while raising a family. She attended Southern State College in Springfield, SD during the summers - with her two children in tow - to complete her college degree in education in 1969. Viola taught third and fourth grade at the Platte Christian School until 1984. She then joined her husband, John in running their hardware store in Platte until his death in July of 1987.
Viola returned to the Platte Christian School as a Teacher/Administrator, which required her to continue her education. She completed her Master’s Degree from Northern University when she was 66 years old, retiring in 1998. Viola also spent 10 summers in China with the English Language Institute/China teaching young professionals English while spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the process. She had been a resident of Mitchell, SD for the past five years. Viola was a much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Grateful for having shared in Viola’s life: a son, Wayne (Lois) Vander Tuin of Omaha, NE and a daughter, Wyonne (Dennis) Kaemingk of Mitchell, SD; five grandchildren: Christine (Benjamin) Vanden Berg, Alicia (Mark) Rist, David (Sally) Vander Tuin, Adam (Hayley) Kaemingk and Bryan (Dr. Bethany) Kaemingk, 11 great grandchildren; three sisters: Doris Markus, Helen (Carlyle) Pheifer and Clarice (Bob) DeVries; two brothers: Stanley (Barb) Noteboom and Wendell (Judy) Noteboom; along with many nieces and nephews.
