Obituary for Helen Jean Van Zee (Carda)
Helen Jean Van Zee, 74, of Platte, SD passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 at Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral Services are 10:30 A.M. Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Christian Reformed Church in New Holland, SD. Burial at New Holland Cemetery will take place at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.
Helen Jean (Carda) Van Zee was born on September 29, 1942 to Leo and Agnes (Hayek) Carda in Armour, SD. She graduated from Lake Andes High School in 1960 and went on to earn her Teaching Certificate from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD. She then taught country school near Lake Andes, SD for two years. On September 10, 1968 Helen was united in marriage to Jacob Gene Van Zee in Minneapolis, MN.
Together they farmed for over 12 years before moving into Platte, SD. Helen was employed at the Platte Health Center as a Housekeeper for more than 30 years and waitressed. She was a hard worker, an avid Minnesota Twins Baseball and Denver Broncos Football fan, and enjoyed completing crossword and word search puzzles. Helen loved time spent with her granddaughter – especially playing board games, cards or bingo.
Helen was a member of the New Holland Christian Reformed Church; was famous for her delicious carrot cake; and cherished her time together with Gene, enjoying their trips to the casino.
Grateful for having shared in Helen’s life: her husband of over 48 years, Gene Van Zee of Platte, SD; a daughter, Jacqueline Jean (Darren) Bogle of Littleton, CO; a granddaughter, Haley Bogle of Littleton, CO; two brothers: Dave (Eileen) Carda of Geddes, SD and Laddie (Doris) Carda of Slayton, MN; a sister, Carol (Bob) Treft of Sioux City, IA; in-laws: Arlene Fiscus of Platte, SD, Maurice (Norma) Van Zee of Platte, SD, Gladys (Gordon) Kuehl of St. Michael, MN and Donna Blomberg of Elk River, MN; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Agnes Carda; seven siblings: Pat (Karl) Vasek, Gary Carda, Kenny (Maxine) Carda, Denny Carda in infancy, Donald Carda, Donna Carda in infancy, and Arlene (Billy) Vander Ham; her mother and father-in-law, Guy and Margaret Van Zee; and in-laws: Clara Iverson (Lyle Gaulke and Vic Iverson), John (Juna Mae) Van Zee, Jim Qualm, Al Fiscus and Terry Blomberg.
