Wesley Pierce Hoekman was born on January 14, 1943 in Douglas County, SD to Frederick and Esther (Van Zee) Hoekman. He attended Platte Elementary and Platte High School, graduating in 1961. On June 12, 1964, Wes was united in marriage to Rita Jean Backes at his parent’s home in Platte. To this union three children were born: Michelle, James and Jody. He began his service in the South Dakota Army National Guard on December 12, 1964.
Wes was self employed and worked with his father at Fred’s Produce. He also worked delivering milk, selling seed, processing pheasants and raising hogs. On June 27, 1983, he began working full time as a Readiness NCO for the South Dakota Army National Guard’s 200th Engineer Company in Chamberlain, SD until his retirement on August 20, 1991. He was a member of Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115 of Platte.
Wes was proud of his children and grandchildren and cherished the time he spent with them. He particularly enjoyed attending and talking about their school activities. As they grew, he looked forward to their conversations about American history and politics; which generally ended in a lively and loud discussion.
Wes loved to golf and was a founding member of the Lake Platte Golf Club. He enjoyed hunting, watching high school sports and history. He was an avid viewer of the Fox News Channel as well.
Grateful for having shared in Wes’ life: his three children and six grandchildren: Michelle and Darwin Hubers of Platte, SD (Anthony Hoekman, Brandon and Miles Hubers), James and Marcy Hoekman of Brandon, SD (Zachery Hoekman) and Jody and Rick Sternberg of Platte, SD (Rachel and Richard Sternberg); his mother, Esther Hoekman of Platte, SD; a sister, Betty and Gordon Visscher of Mitchell SD; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
