Cornelius Lieuwen was born near Joubert, South Dakota on Christmas Day, 1922 to Pete and Nellie (Gerritsen) Lieuwen. When he was four years old his family moved to New Holland. His schooling was at New Holland Christian School where he graduated from the eighth grade in 1936 and immediately began his first job, working with his dad at the New Holland Garage. He joined the Army Air Corp in October of 1942. He married Eleanor Zylstra in September of 1944 and then served in Guam as a prop mechanic on B-29 bombers until the end of the war. He eventually bought the garage and continued working there until he sold it in 1988. He enjoyed the challenge of fixing anything, and said in the old days you could fix any car if you had a pliers, a screwdriver, and some baling wire. After retiring from the garage, his next job along with his wife was as janitor at Dakota Christian High School.
He inherited a love of gardening from his mother. He also loved to fish, and hunt, especially with his son and grandsons. Except for Sunday, he always wore striped bib overall. He enjoyed collecting coins, making wooden banks using old post office box doors, sharing stories with friends, and an honor flight to Washington DC. He especially loved the weeks the entire family gathered at a lake in Minnesota.
They were blessed with four daughters and one son.
He had a lifelong love for music. He sang in church choirs and was for many years a member of the Dakota Jubilee, an experience which brought him much joy. He and his wife also sang duets together for many years.
He was a member of the New Holland Christian Reformed Church, where he served as Deacon and Elder. As well, he served on the board of New Holland Christian School.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Eleanor Lieuwen, and their devotion to each other was a blessing to all. As well he is survived by five children: Beatrice (Terry) Pheifer of Bellevue, Washington, Frances (Marlin) De Vries of West Des Moines, Iowa, Janice (Ron) Van Zee of Platte, South Dakota, Percy (Vicki) Lieuwen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Gail (Alvin) Punt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; thirteen grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Duane and Linda Tjeerdsma of Springfield, South Dakota; three sisters-in-law: Mae Lieuwen of Platte, South Dakota, Char Uilenberg of Platte, South Dakota and Marionette Zylstra of Geddes, South Dakota.
He died on January 16, 2018 at the Platte Care Center at the age of 95. He will be greatly missed.
