Eleanor Zylstra was born to Richard and Helen (Disselkoen) Zylstra on February 23, 1923 on a farm south of Joubert, SD. She had three older sisters: Anna, Martha and Gertrude and brothers, Simon (Bud), Gerald and younger brother, Lawrence. Eleanor attended Moad Country School and went to Platte High School for two years. She married Cornelius Lieuwen at her parents’ home on Tuesday, September 12, 1944, while Cornie was home on furlough. Shortly after their marriage, Cornie and Eleanor moved to Salina, Kansas where Cornie was stationed in the Army Air Corps. When Cornie returned from the service, they moved into their home in New Holland where they would live for the next 69 years. Cornie and Eleanor were blessed with four daughters and one son. Eleanor spent the early years of marriage raising her children. She enjoyed sewing and sewed clothes for many in the area, including wedding dresses. She shared her love for sewing by teaching many girls in the area the skill of sewing. Later in life she worked at Dykstra’s Department Store, she was the janitor at New Holland Christian School and she and Cornie were custodians at Dakota Christian High School for many years. Eleanor loved being at the schools and always felt a special bond with the teachers.
Eleanor was a lifelong member of the New Holland Christian Reformed Church, where she taught catechism, was the Head Counselor of the Calvinette Club and worked in the church library. She was involved in Harmony Workers, Hosanna Club, Ladies Aid, Dakota Christian High Auxiliary and Good Neighbor Extension Club. She made many lifelong friendships through her involvement in these groups. She loved morning coffees with the neighbor ladies. Eleanor enjoyed singing, especially with her favorite singing partner, Cornie. They started singing together when the pastor at their wedding surprised them by asking them to sing a duet.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Cornie, who died just eight days earlier.
She is survived by her children: Beatrice (Terry) Pheifer of Bellevue, Washington, Frances (Marlin) DeVries of West Des Moines, Iowa, Janice (Ron) Van Zee of Platte, South Dakota, Percy (Vicki) Lieuwen and Gail (Alvin) Punt both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; thirteen grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Marrionette Zylstra, Mae Lieuwen and Char Uilenberg; brother-in-law, Duane (Linda) Tjeerdsma; and many nieces and nephews.
