Esther Hoekman (Van Zee)
Esther Louise Hoekman, 96, of Platte, SD passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Platte Care Center Avera. A Committal Service will take place at 9:00 A.M. on Monday, February 19, 2018 at the New Holland Cemetery. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Platte Christian Reformed Church. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte with a 4:00 P.M. Prayer Service.
Esther Louise (Van Zee) Hoekman was born on March 28, 1921 to Peter and Gertrude (Poelstra) Van Zee in New Holland, SD. She attended Van Zee Country School and was united in marriage to Frederick Henry Hoekman on June 3, 1941 at her parent’s home in Douglas County, SD. From this union two children were born, Wesley and Betty. Together they raised their family and farmed in the New Holland area while Fred taught country school.
In 1947, they moved to Platte, SD where Fred managed the Fairmont Creamery until 1954 when they purchased it and started Fred’s Produce. After getting out of the business, Esther worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Platte Hospital for many years.
Esther was an active member of the Platte Christian Reformed Church, enjoyed flower gardening and loved to spend time with her family.
Grateful for having shared in Esther’s life: her daughter, Betty (Gordon) Visscher of Mitchell, SD; seven grandchildren: Michelle (Darwin) Hubers of Platte, SD, James (Marcy) Hoekman of Brandon, SD, Jody (Rick) Sternberg of Platte, SD, Craig (Katy) Visscher of Rapid City, SD, Corey (Monica) Visscher of Sioux Falls, SD, Curtis (Robin) Visscher of Lennox, SD and Carla (Ryan) Tracy of Groton, SD; 18 great grandchildren; a brother, Royce Van Zee of Corsica, SD; along with many nieces and nephews.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Fred (Sept. 20, 2008); her son, Wes (Nov. 3, 2017) and his wife, Rita (Apr. 15, 2015); her parents, Peter and Gertrude; four sisters; four brothers; five sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.
