Marie Rose Lucie (Handfield) Ells was born on October 2, 1924 to Leopold Paul and Mary Amelia (Gervais) Handfield in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. The family moved to Willimantic, Connecticut when she was a year old. She attended St. Mary’s Parochial School for eight years and graduated from Willimantic High School in 1943. Marie went on to work at the Army Armory where she met Stowe E. Ells, who was stationed there. They were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willimantic on April 22, 1944.
After Stowe’s honorable discharge from the Army in 1945, they relocated to South Dakota, farming southeast/northeast of Platte until retiring in 1991 and moving into town. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Platte.
Marie will always be known for her singing, walking, running, her deep faith and for being a hard worker. She enjoyed baking, cooking, swimming and letter writing. She will fondly be remembered for the beautiful things she created through knitting, crocheting and sewing. Marie was always thinking of others.
Grateful for having shared in Marie’s life: her two daughters: Carol Ann Schieffer and husband, Jerry and Peggy Lea Wall both of Platte, SD; along with many nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Stowe Ells (Apr. 15, 2000); a son-in-law, Dan Wall (1999); her parents, Leopold and Mary Amelia Handfield; eight siblings: Martha Louise (Handfield) Marrotte, Louis Leo Handfield, Irene Regina (Handfield) Dupont, Raymond Napolian Handfield, Laura Ann (Handfield) Daly, Gilbert “Pat” Joseph Handfield, Norman Rudolf Handfield – who shared her same birth date four years earlier and Therese Rita Handfield; and several in-laws.
