Obituary for Richard Dale "Rich" Postma
Richard Dale Postma, 82, of Platte, SD passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society – Corsica, SD. Funeral Services are 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 9, 2018 at the First Reformed Church in Platte. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.
Richard Dale Postma was born on April 20, 1935 to John and Anna (Newman) Postma in Platte, SD. He grew up to be a soft hearted jokester who loved people, graduating from Platte High School in 1954. Rich was united in marriage to the love of his life, Muriel Luella Porter on June 17, 1956 at the Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte. He enlisted in 1957 and went on to serve a total of 20 years in the Platte unit of the South Dakota Army National Guard. He was a member of the Platte First Reformed Church.
Rich was employed as a pin setter at the Platte Lanes, did carpentry work and worked for the Platte Hatchery. He also worked for local farmers growing crops and raising cattle. He worked at the Platte Sale Barn with a great crew. Rich enjoyed camping, gardening, playing cards, dancing and visits to Deb and Merlin’s farm. He loved his family and cherished time spent with them.
Grateful for having shared in Rich’s life: his two children: Debra and Merlin Van Zee of Harrison, SD and Bruce and Lee Ann Postma of Bryan, TX; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren: Alissa and Danny Howard (Ezra, Avery, Jack, Emily), Melissa and Troy Lefers (Denver, Emory, Jevyn), Sheena and Lyndon Maas (Josie, Joseph), Jacob Postma, Rachel Postma, Sarah and Sam Best (Jude), Caleb (Hannah) Postma, Halle Postma, Faith Postma and Joshua Postma; a sister, Gladys (Lawrence) Miller of Colorado Springs, CO; three sisters-in-law: Margaret Postma of Platte, SD, Edie Porter of Armour, SD and Shirley (Bob) Broome of Alamogordo, NM; along with many nieces and nephews.
Rich was preceded in death by: his wife, Mert Postma (Jan. 21, 2015); his parents, John and Anna Postma; three brothers: Harold Postma, Robert (Eunice) Postma and Don Postma; three sisters: Dorothy (Fred) Brandle, Henrietta (Harold) Bultje and Lillian (Nile) Dimick; his parents-in-law, Walter and Hazel Porter; four sisters-in-law: Ida Viola Porter, Valda (Walter) Drake, Loretta (Eddie) King and Norma (Louis) Thomson; and two brothers-in-law: Richard (Janice) Porter and Raymond Porter.
