Florence June (Paauw) Rommen was born on June 22, 1931 to Sietse Paauw and Eke (Pranger) Paauw in Platte, SD. She graduated from Platte High School in 1949, and was united in marriage to William “Bill” Nydam on March 3, 1949. From this union three children were born: Larry, Diane, and Debra “Deb”.
June was employed as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Platte, SD. She also worked as a souvenir painter for Van Zee’s Plastic Factory in Platte as well as being a bookkeeper for her husband’s barbershop business. In later years, she worked in the kitchen baking cookies at the Platte Nursing Home, Platte, SD.
On October 9, 1970, she was united in marriage to James C. “Jim” Rommen. To this union a son was born, James “Jim” Rommen.
June was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Platte, SD, and she had a very strong faith in God. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family, and she loved having everyone together for holidays especially. She found comfort and joy when spending time with her children and their spouses as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. June had a soft spot in her heart for all children and especially so for special needs and abused children. Her volunteer work with the special needs children in the Platte community was something she treasured as it brought her much joy to know that she was making a difference if only in a small way. One of June’s favorite Bible verses was, “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the Kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:14.
Traveling to Sioux Falls for shopping was always a special treat for June. She did this often with her sister, Juelle (Paauw) Wendt, and part of the day usually meant meeting up with one of her daughters, Diane or Deb, to share in the day. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles as well as drawing and watercolor painting. June had a talent for making a house a home and wherever she lived throughout her life, her home was always decorated in a cozy, warm and welcoming way.
Grateful for having shared in June’s life are her husband of 47 years, Jim Rommen; her beloved sister, Juelle (Paauw) Wendt; her children: Larry (Nancy) Nydam, Diane (Doug) Sevening, Deb (Tom) Madigan, and Jim (Kim) Rommen; her nine grandchildren: Dean (Julie) Nydam, Brenda (Glen) Fiola, Jason (Layce) Nydam, Rod (Rebecca) Sevening, Ryan Sevening, Jennifer (JR) Hunt, Dustin (Jessica) Lingemann, Grace Rommen, and Gavin Rommen; her eight great-grandchildren: Landon Fiola, Isley Fiola, Ava Sevening, Nya Sevening, Steven Troll, Tristan Troll, Hannah Hunt, and Charlie Hunt; as well as all of her nieces and nephews.
June was proceeded in death by her parents, Sietse and Eke Paauw; sister, Adeline Helma; and brother, Donald “DJ” Paauw.
