Obituary for James L. "Jim" Cody

James L. "Jim"  Cody
James L. Cody, 68, of Plankinton, SD passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial Services are 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 15, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Plankinton, with Military Honors to follow. Visitation will be held at the church from 5:30 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 14, 2018 with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.

James L. Cody was born on October 24, 1949 to William F. Cody, Sr. and Lyda “Gwen” (Davis) Cody in Springfield, MO. He was a 1967 graduate of Baker High School in Baker, MT and went on serve in the US Air Force from 1968 – 1972. He studied Nursing at Montana State University and then completed the University of North Dakota Family Nurse Practioner Program in Grand Forks, ND, graduating Jan. 12, 1979 with specialty of clinical area – Family Nurse Practioner. He received his South Dakota certificate on Apr. 20, 1979 and sat for the NCCPA exam on Nov. 19, 1979.

On July 1, 1977 Jim was united in marriage to the love of his life Donna Sampson in Glendive, MT. He was a valued member of the Plankinton community serving as a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner at the Aurora County Clinic for over 35 years.

Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church and Goeres-Woods American Legion Post #5 of Plankinton. He was involved with the South Dakota Academy of Physician Assistants in many capacities, serving as: Treasurer (1986-89), Pharmaceutical Liaison (1989), House of Delegates (1989), President (1990-92) and Past President (1992-93). Jim was also a member of the Plankinton Development Corporation, the Plankinton School Board, the Plankinton City Council, Medical Director for the Plankinton Ambulance, past member of the Plankinton Fire Department, medical provider for the South Dakota State Training School, and Aurora County Coroner.

Jim greatly enjoyed being outdoors while fishing, golfing, boating, flying, and spending time with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared in Jim’s life: his wife of over 40 years, Donna Cody of Plankinton, SD; their three sons: Cory (Susan) Cody of White Owl, SD, Casey (Nikki) Cody of Sioux Falls, SD and Chad (Nathel) Cody of Mitchell, SD; eight grandchildren: Shayna (Ty) Traversie, Chyann, Mya, Ava, Rylan, Alex, Zach and Brooklyn Cody; two great grandchildren: Taitum and Jayden Traversie; sister-in-law, Vonna Cody of Glendive, MT, brother-in-law, Ron (Nikki) Sampson of Twin Bridges, MT, sister-in-law, Kris Haines (fiancé, Jon) of Sioux Falls, SD, brother-in-law, Wayne Sampson of Billings, MT and sister-in-law, Tena (John) Wiley of Williston, ND. Jim was very proud of his nieces and nephews: Kim, BJ, Chyla, Tanner, Jason, Annie, Jena, Jarod, Chelsea and Cassea.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William F. Cody, Sr. and Lyda “Gwen” Cody; his brother, William F. Cody, Jr.; his parents-in-law, Mable and Miff Sampson; and sister-in-law, Susan Sampson.

Jim was very grateful for all the help and special friendship from his neighbors Lawron and DeEtte Bohr and their children Kaylin, Mallory and Blaine.
