Elsie V. Petula (Helma)
Elsie V. Petula, 100, of Kimball, SD passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 28, 2018 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. A Committal Service will follow at St. Margaret’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Church from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, September 27, 2018 with a 7:00 P.M Wake and Rosary Service.

Elsie V. (Helma) Petula was born February 13, 1918 to Frank P. and Teresie L. (Vagner) Helma on the family farm in Highland Township, Brule County, SD. She attended country school and then Kimball High School, graduating in 1935. She went on to earn her teaching certificate from Eastern Normal in Madison, SD. She then taught in the Kimball School and rural schools in the county.

On June 25, 1947 Elsie was united in marriage to Ervin C. Petula at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. They lived on the Petula farm until moving into Kimball in 1987. Elsie continued to teach on a regular and substitute basis for a career that spanned 40 years. During that time she had furthered her education by attending Dakota Wesleyan University, the University of South Dakota in Springfield and a number of other study centers. Her interest in history led her to do research for the book, A Century of Faith, to co-author the book, Echoes of the Past and publish the book, Re-Echoing the Past. In 1982, she and her brother, Leonard organized a Helma Family Reunion for all the Helma descendants honoring their grandparents, Frank and Marie Helma.

Elsie was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church and in 1955, was a charter member of their Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She served on the boards of: the Brule County Historical Society, Petula School, Highland School, Aurora-Brule Nursing Home and the Kimball Centennial Library. She was also awarded a life membership in the South Dakota P.T.A. and belonged to various social clubs.

Grateful for having shared in Elsie’s life: a sister-in-law, Dolores Helma of Bismarck, ND; 14 nieces and nephews; along with many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Petula (Jul. 28, 1989); her parents, Frank and Teresie Helma; a sister, Libbie (Howard) Armstrong; four brothers: Otto Helma, Robert (Myrlene) Helma, Allen (Alice) Helma and Leonard Helma; her father and mother-in-law, John and Emma Petula; and two sisters-in-law: Alma Stuntebeck and Gladys Fuegen.

Memorials in Elsie’s honor may be directed to: St. Margaret’s Catholic Daughters, PO Box 137, Kimball, SD 57355.
