Obituary for Beverly Jeanne "Bev" Pennington (Melcher)

Beverly Jeanne "Bev" Pennington (Melcher)
Beverly Jeanne (Melcher) Pennington, 87, of Platte, SD passed away Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Ava’s House by Sanford in Sioux Falls, SD after a long illness. Funeral Services are 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte. A Committal Service will follow at the Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Beverly Jeanne (Melcher) Pennington was born on February 8, 1931 in Vermillion, SD to Cecil and Phyllis (Walz) Melcher. She attended elementary and high school in Platte, SD, graduating in 1948 and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1952 with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation she accepted a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Aberdeen. Three years later she transferred to Anchorage, Alaska.

In 1958 she moved to Washington, DC where she was employed by the Department of Dental Health. There she met her husband, Glen Dale Pennington. They married on September 1, 1965 in a private ceremony performed by her father, Judge Cecil L. Melcher. To this union one daughter was born, Terri Lynn.

They settled in Platte and she went to work for her father in his legal and tax service (currently known as White Tiger Financial Service). In 1974 Bev and Glen bought his practice and ran it together until Glen's death in 1986. After that she continued to run it herself until 1999 when she sold the business to her daughter, Terri. She continued working in the business until she retired at the age of 85.

In 1966 they built Penn Mel Marina and operated it until 1976. In the early 70's they moved briefly to California and back to Platte twice. In 1981 they purchased 1/2 of the Barrister Restaurant, Hotel, and Lounge which they operated until 1986.

Bev was an avid reader and served on the Platte Women's Club supporting the city library for many years. She was also instrumental in founding the Lyric Theatre Museum which was renamed the Cecil and Phyllis Melcher Museum after her parents in 2013.

Professionally, she served as Secretary/Treasurer of the South Dakota Chapter of the American Society of Tax Professionals and later as their President. She was a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, National Institute of Tax Practitioners, and on the Board of Regents of the Certified Tax Practitioners Society. She also holds the distinction of being the first female President of the Platte Chamber of Commerce.

Grateful for having shared in Bev’s life: her daughter, Terri (Ron) of Platte; her brother, Warren (Dorothy) of Murdo; four grandchildren: Shaun, Brian, and Xaviera of Platte and Enjoli (Alex) of Sioux Falls; three step-grandchildren: Crystal (Buddy) of Alexandria, Ronald Jon, Jr. (Allison) of Ethan, and Jessica (Nicholi) of Fulton; five step-great-grandchildren; along with four nephews and two nieces.

Bev was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her parents, Cecil and Phyllis; her sister, Maxine; a step-granddaughter, Heather; and a niece, Carolyn.
