Obituary for Francis John Graf

Francis John Graf
Francis John Graf, 102, of Platte, SD passed away Monday, November 12, 2018 at Platte Care Center Avera. Funeral Mass is 10:30 A.M. Friday, Nov 16, 2018 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Platte. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services on Friday.

Francis John Graf was born on September 26, 1916 to Stephen and Mary (Boardman) Graf in Yankton, SD. He graduated from Platte High School in 1935 and went to work in his family’s grocery store. With the out break of World War II, he then served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Corps from August 22, 1942 – November 10, 1945. Trained as a Radio Operator, he helped set up and maintain mobile air bases while stationed in Europe.

On July 5, 1954 Francis was united in marriage to Lois Irene Hintz at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Platte. Together they owned and operated the Graf Grocery Store until its’ closing in 1984. They had one son, Francis Stephen born on June 20, 1957 and passed away the same day. Francis and Lois were together for 43 years until her passing on August 20, 1997.

Francis was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where he played the organ, the Knights of Columbus, Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115 and served on the Platte Fire Department for 50 years. He was a lifelong fan of the University of Georgia Bulldogs, stemming from the time he spent there during his military training in radio studies before going overseas. He also enjoyed bowling for several years and was an avid Platte-Geddes Black Panther fan.

Francis never lost his love for communication after his time in the service and spent many hours talking with his CB radio friends. He even branched out to computers well into his 80’s, becoming proficient in email and other online communications.

Grateful for having shared in Francis’ life are two nephews and many friends.

Francis was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Graf; his son, Francis Stephen Graf; his parents, Steve and Mary Graf; two brothers; two sisters; parents-in-law, Ernie and Nealey Hintz; and three brothers-in-law.
