Bruce Merle Bakken, 94, of Platte, SD passed away Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Platte Health Center Avera. Memorial Services with Military Honors will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 23, 2018 at the Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte. A Private Family Committal Service will be held at a later date at the Platte City Cemetery.

Bruce Merle Bakken was born to Jacob and Jennie (Koster) Bakken on February 28, 1924 in Platte, SD. He attended rural schools in the Platte area and graduated from Platte High School in 1942. Bruce joined the US Navy Amphibious Force in December 1942 and served for 3 ½ years seeing action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during WWII, including the D-Day invasion.

Bruce married Darleen Pranger on January 11, 1946. They purchased and lived on the same farm for 70 years. They have one son, Kirby.

Bruce was a member of Olive Presbyterian Church where he served on the Session, was Sunday School Superintendent for many years and sang in the choir. Boards on which he served as an officer include: Charles Mix Farm Bureau, County Conservation, County FHA, Weed Board, Charles Mix County 911 Board and Platte Elevator Board. He served as a County Commissioner for 20 years. Conservation of the soil was very important to him.

Bruce was a member of the American Legion for over 70 years and was also a member of the VFW. Charitable giving showed his love for mankind. A particular favorite charity was “Make-A-Wish”. Many local charities were also helped.

Bruce loved his family, enjoyed playing the piano, having coffee with his friends at Subway, playing cards, and depended on his “Mule” for farm chores. He and Darleen traveled to many countries through the years. He was a golfer and bowler.

Those who mourn for him are: his wife of over 72 years, Darleen Bakken of Platte, SD; son, Kirby (Ruth) Bakken of Byron, MN; two grandsons: Alan (Karen) Bakken of Midvale, Utah and Marlow (Joliene Lindholm) Bakken of Fitchburg, Wisconsin; brother, Lloyd Bakken; nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Jacob and Jennie; a sister, Violet; sister-in-law, Doris Bakken; and a nephew, Kenneth Bakken.
