Elma Schroeder, 87, wife of the late John Henry Schroeder of Plankinton, SD, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Weskota Manor Avera in Wessington Springs, SD. Funeral Mass is 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 6, 2019 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton. A Committal Service will follow at Mizpah Catholic Cemetery, Plankinton. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. prior to services on Saturday.

Elma Lorraine Mitchell was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on December 16, 1931 to Mike and Alice (Thompson) Mitchell. She was the fourth of six daughters. She grew up in the Black Hills and went to school in Pennington County. She graduated from Hill City High School in 1949. After attending Black Hills Teacher’s College, she came to Aurora County to teach school. She first taught in a rural one-room school and later taught in Stickney schools, where she retired in 1990.
In 1950, she married John Henry Schroeder in Plankinton, South Dakota. To their union, two sons were born, Rodney John and Edward John. She was very active in bowling and golfing. Fish Lake Country Club was very dear to her. She was an active golfer into her 80’s. She was also active in many church activities. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas was a very important part of her life, and she served as Grand Regent of the local court for 2 terms. She also was a Charter member of the Ever Ready Club in Plankinton, South Dakota and was active until her death. In 2015, Elma moved into the Weskota Apartments in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. This is where she resided until the time of her passing.
Elma is survived by: a son, Edward Schroeder and his wife, Lynelle of Wessington Springs, South Dakota; four grandchildren: Chelsey and Bethany Schroeder of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, Jennifer (Michael) Feistner of Woonsocket, South Dakota, and Troy (Kerry) Fink of Plankinton, South Dakota; four great grandchildren: Emmitt and Henry Feistner of Woonsocket, South Dakota, and Tory and Alexys Fink of Plankinton, South Dakota; two sisters; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Alice Mitchell; her husband, John Henry Schroeder in 2008; an infant son, Rodney Schroeder; and three sisters.
