Edgar Harry “Ed” Oster was born September 27, 1937 to Harry and Ann Margret (Brandl) Oster in Irvington, New Jersey. Ed graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in June of 1959. He went on to Middlebury College and graduated with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Foreign Languages. (Ed was fluent in English and German but he also spoke French, Spanish, Russian and a little Italian) Music was an important part of Ed’s life and it was while playing the drums in the college marching band he met a clarinetist who stole his heart. On June 26, 1960 Ed married the love of his life, Judith Ann McKay at Sparta Methodist Church in Sparta, New Jersey. To this union three children were born: Sandra, Tracy and John.
Ed joined the US Air Force as a Medic after college. He served three years, two in Harlingen, Texas and one unaccompanied tour in Greenland. After completing his service commitment Ed and Judy made their home in New Jersey, living there until he retired in 2006 when they moved to the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. Following open heart surgery in 2014, he relocated to Platte, SD.
Ed worked for Ames Rubber Corporation as a Salesman and later as the Human Resource Manager. Upon leaving that company Ed sold insurance, managed a men’s accessory shop and managed several Radio Shack stores. Ed loved to visit and talk which made him an excellent salesman. He was an avid reader and would never turn down a chance to debate. God and Family were the center of Ed’s life. Ed and Judy attended and supported all of their children’s activities including countless swim meets, cheerleading and dance events and musical concerts. Ed was a Boy Scout Leader (he himself was an Eagle Scout) and played in the orchestra pit for the multiple musicals in which Sandra and John were involved. He was a baritone in the church choir, taught Sunday School and was a youth group mentor until physically unable to continue. Ed’s other love was music, he could play most instruments; his favorites being the guitar, bass fiddle and piano. Ed had his own band in high school; he played bass fiddle in the Sussex County Community Orchestra for many years and was well known for spontaneously breaking out in song.
Blessed to have shared his life are: his wife of 59 years, Judy Oster of Platte, SD; three children: Sandra (Kenneth) Bombria of Omaha, NE, Tracy (Daniel) Harrington of Platte, SD and John (Cynthia) Hunt of Wilmington, NC; six grandchildren: Angela Oster of California, Michelle Oster of California, Faith Oster, of Milford, PA, John Oster of East Stroudsburg, PA, Daniel (Amanda ) Harrington of Platte, SD and Christine (KO) Naluai of California; two great grandchildren: Rhett Harrington and Elsie Harrington; one brother, Eugene (Lois) Oster of Los Gatos, CA; a brother and sister-in-law, James (Dianne) Nuner of Michigan; along with some very special nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
