Lyle Robert DeHaan, 88, of Platte, SD passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Platte Care Center Avera. Memorial Services are 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 7, 2019 at the First Reformed Church in Platte. A private family Committal Service will take place at Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M., including 11:30 A.M. lunch with the family.
Lyle Robert DeHaan was born on February 4, 1931 to John and Jessie (DeJong) DeHaan on the family farm south of Platte, SD. He graduated from Platte High School in 1949, actively participating in band and choir. A great honor was being a member of both the National FFA Band and Chorus. He confessed his faith and became a member of the First Reformed Church in Platte where he was very active throughout his life. He married the love of his life, Ruth Marie Holter on August 20, 1950 at the Platte Trinity Lutheran Church.
Lyle and Ruth spent their married life on their family farm near the Missouri River south of Platte. From this union six children were born who were taught hard work, the value of education, and the value of a Christian faith life. Besides farming, Lyle had a long career on the Platte School Board, several years as Chairman; was active on the First Reformed Church Consistory; and along with his wife, participated in local and national mission projects. Lyle loved bowling, fishing, golfing, and playing cards with friends.
He cherished his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made attempts to be at many major and minor events in their lives. As faithful as he was feeding cattle, planting corn, fixing fence and laying irrigation pipe, he was faithful in praying by name for each of his children, their spouses and grandchildren daily. Although his eyesight failed the last years of his life, his vision for all his family to be together in heaven never dimmed. Two years following the death of his wife, he moved from the farm into Platte assisted living and was currently a resident of the Platte Care Center.
Grateful for sharing in Lyle’s life include his six children: Pamela (Randy) Moreland of Bent Mountain, VA, Keith (Jennifer) DeHaan of Kansas City, MO, Kayleen (Gordon) Hubers of Platte, SD, Douglas (Connie) DeHaan of Sioux Falls, SD, Daniel DeHaan of Aberdeen, SD and Carol (Jay) Rozeboom of Rock Rapids, IA; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Lee Ann DeHaan of Platte, SD and Joan Holter of Vermillion, SD; along with many nieces and nephews.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jessie DeHaan; his wife, Ruth (Holter) DeHaan (Mar. 17, 2010); three brothers; and five sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Lyle's memory may be directed to: First Reformed Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 418, Platte, SD 57369.
