Mary Kathryn Turnis, 86, of Platte, SD passed away Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Platte Health Center Avera. Funeral Mass is 10:30 A.M. Friday, February 21, 2020 at St. Peterâ€™s Catholic Church in Platte. A Committal Service will follow at St. Peterâ€™s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 5:00 â€“ 7:00 P.M. Thursday, February 20, 2020 with a 7:00 P.M. Wake Service and Rosary.

Mary Kathryn (Loneman) Turnis was born on December 6, 1933 to Herman and Susie (Conzemius) Loneman on the family farm in Douglas County, SD near Armour. She graduated from Armour High School in 1951 and went on to Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD. On August 10, 1954 Mary was united in marriage to Joseph Jacob Turnis at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Armour, SD.
After teaching country school for 19 years, Mary helped grow the family business while working at Turnis Farm Service. She was a member of St. Peterâ€™s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Platte, SD and a member of Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post #115 Auxiliary, serving as District President. Mary was a hard worker, but enjoyed time off while traveling with Joe.
Grateful for having shared in Maryâ€™s life, a son, Herman (Karen) Turnis of Platte, SD; four grandchildren: Megan (Chris) Houlihan of Parker, SD, Heather (Colin) Nachtigal of Harrold, SD, Mindy (Jon) Doom of Rapid City, SD and Drew (Tristen) Turnis of Platte, SD; four great grandchildren: Adalynn Nachtigal, Katelyn Houlihan, Nolan Nachtigal and Baker Doom; two step great grandchildren: Tylor and Evan Houlihan; seven sisters-in-law: Pat Loneman of Bridgewater, SD, Alice Loneman of Centerville, SD, Arlene Weber of Sioux Falls, SD, Ellen (Paul) Samuelson of Platte, SD, Ruth Anderson of Platte, SD, Mary (Dean) Antonsen of Rapid City, SD and Delores Anderson of Platte, SD; along with several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Turnis (Oct. 22, 2016); identical twin sons, John and James in infancy; her parents, Herman and Susie Loneman; a sister, Gladys Loneman; three brothers: Virgil (Gert) Loneman, Leo Loneman and Francis Loneman; parents-in-law, Herman and Margaret Turnis; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Anderson; and three brothers-in-law: Vernon Weber, Bernard â€śBootsâ€ť Anderson and Bob Anderson.
