Gladys Mae Beckman, 76, of Platte, SD passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Platte Care Center Avera. Funeral Services are 1:30 P.M. Friday, June 5, 2020 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte. A Committal Service will follow at Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 P.M. – 1:30 P.M. prior to services on Friday.

Gladys Mae Beckman was born on February 17, 1944 to Clyde and Jennie (Sterk) Beckman in Douglas County, SD. At a very young age, Gladys was bitten by a dog and suffered the rest of her life with seizures and learning disabilities.

Gladys was a resident of the Redfield State Hospital from 1966 – 1977 and from 1977 – 1984, lived with several families in the Huron, SD area. In 1984 she moved to Mitchell, SD to be closer to family. Gladys lived independently in several apartments and received services from Life Quest. In 2005 Gladys moved to the Radtke House in Mitchell and really enjoyed being in a group home, receiving wonderful care and support from the staff. Because of declining health, she moved to the Platte Care Center in November of 2013. She was excited to move “back home” to Platte and received excellent care.

Gladys loved to socialize and reminisce about stories from the past. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always had a big smile for everyone.

Grateful for having shared in Gladys’ life: a brother, Gary (Marge) Beckman of Parker, SD; two sisters: Evelyn (Lloyd) Bultsma and Melba (Rich) Gukeisen both of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law, Jean Beckman of Chamberlain, SD; eight nieces and nephews; 22 great nieces and nephews; along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Jennie Beckman; a brother, Ervin Beckman; and her grandparents: John and Minnie Sterk, Will and Anna Beckman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gladys’ honor may be directed to: Platte Care Center Avera, PO Box 200, Platte, SD 57369.

I was blessed with the most amazing sister-in-law! Gladys was truly an Angel that lived among us! She was pure in heart, loving, and always happy despite all the hardships she suffered through her life. She never grumbled or complained. What an example she was to all of us! As Revelation 21 promises, all of Gladys' tears have been wiped away, she will have no more sorrow or pain.
Rest in peace, dear Gladys! With love, Marge Beckman
