Doris Mae (Verba) Dertien was born on September 21, 1939 to Tony and Dorothy (Krokaugger) Verba in Wagner, SD. She moved to Lake Andes, SD at the age of five and graduated from Lake Andes High School in 1957. After graduation she attended Nettleton Business College and worked for the South Dakota Child Welfare office.
On April 28, 1962 she married Ralph Philip Dertien of Platte, SD at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Lake Andes and began the life of a farm wife. During this time she did a few part time jobs. Her favorite was working for the Drake Greenhouse for five years. Doris loved gardening and flower beds. She had many hobbies which included baking, cross stitching and playing Solitaire on her computer. She loved the technology of email and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. During the holidays Doris loved to bake and hand out cookie trays or as she called them "goodie trays" to friends and neighbors. She loved hosting so she could try out a new recipe. Christmas was her favorite holiday; she put up a big tree and two or three little trees and would be out the day after Christmas to start shopping for next year.
Doris was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church as well as a member of the Red Hat Society called the Platte Scarlet O'Hatters. In 1991, a home in Vegas was purchased and she spent winters there from November to April. While in Vegas she attended St. Viator Catholic Church. Doris was not a gambler, she spent her time in Vegas going to the movie theater, shopping for her grandchildren and spending time with her daughter.
Grateful for having shared in Doris’ life: her three children: Mike (Darla) Dertien of Sioux Falls, SD, Donna Dertien of Las Vegas, NV and Curtis (Deanna) Dertien of Platte, SD; five grandchildren: Thomey Dertien (Destiny Zoss), Brooklyn Dertien and Levi Dertien all of Sioux Falls SD, Denise Dertien of Williamsburg, VA and Rick Dertien of Platte, SD; two great-grandchildren: Bentley Dertien and Polly Dertien both of Sioux Falls SD; two brothers: Ted (Joan) Verba of Plainfield, CT and Steve (Marlys) Verba of Sterling, AK; two sisters-in-law: Sandy Breukelman of Green Bay, WI and Dolly Kooima of Spirit Lake, IA; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
