Dorothy Marie (Geppert) Urban was born on July 4, 1924 to Henry and Margaret (Lucas) Geppert in Kimball, SD, the third youngest of 11 children. She attended country school and graduated from Kimball High School in 1942. She worked for Adolph and Della Burian for two years in their home and clerking in their grocery store before marrying Leonard Joseph Urban on June 21, 1944 at St. Margaret’s Parsonage in Kimball.
They began their life together farming north of Kimball and raising their four children: Dick, Diane, Dennis and Ray. She remained on the farm until moving to Kimball in 2006. Our mother was a loving and devoted wife, and cared for her children with a warm affection that only a mother knows. Time spent with family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were precious to her.
Along with the farm chores and household duties, she often found herself hostess to the many friends and neighbors that stopped by for a cup of coffee and bite to eat. She enjoyed socializing, especially playing cards in card club and going to dances with dad. She also kept busy with quilting and crocheting.
Her Catholic faith was central to her life; regular mass attendance, reading the Bible, and praying the rosary daily. Dorothy was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar Society and even taught Catechism for a year in her 80’s.
Grateful for having shared in Dorothy’s life, her children, 14 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren: son, Dick (Karen) Urban of Hillsboro, WI and children: Sheila (Chris) Eisermann – Kinza, Chloe and Jacob, Stacie (Sam) Bosley – Mason, Sydney and Marcus, Gina (Eric) Auel – Payton, Andrea and Lauren, Rick (Sadie) Urban – Reed and Tess, Brian (Liz Arthur) Urban – Lily; daughter, Diane Barr (friend, Ken) of Houston, TX and children: Gary (Linda) Barr and Kristoffer Barr; son, Dennis (Ginger) Urban of Kimball, SD and children: Jeff Urban – Bailee and Spencer, Jason (Marcey) Urban – Devan, Cole and Sarah, Chad (Robyn) Urban – Mariah and Dawson, Skyler (Sophia Strubbe) Urban; daughter-in-law, Jan Urban of Pukwana, SD and children: Michael (Nichole) Urban – Anthony and Allison, Ryan (Samantha) Urban – Trace, Huntley, Rhett and Briggs, Tara (Kyle) Wieczorek – Reagan, Emma and Carter, Brooklynn (Ross) Kieffer – Savanna and Sullivan; two sisters-in-law: Agnes Geppert and Janice Geppert; brother-in-law, Bob (Pat) Urban; along with many nieces and nephews.
