Maurice F. Van Zee was born on January 20, 1937 to Gerrit J. and Margaret (VanDerWerff) Van Zee at the family home in Douglas County, SD. He attended country school, earned his GED and then was honored to serve his country in the US Army from 1955 – 1957. On April 17, 1959 Maurice was united in marriage to Norma Wentland at the United Methodist Church in Geddes, SD.
While beginning a life and family together with Norma, he worked with Allen Polly as a Bus Driver, was employed at Severson Service Station and took part in helping to build the Platte-Winner Bridge. In March of 1969 he started Van Zee Sanitary Service and operated it as a family business having employed several children and grandchildren. Maurice was a prominent figure in the lives of his family, friends and those in the community, always thoroughly enjoying life and emanating kindness and laughter.
