Marie Katherine Gukeisen was born on September 2, 1927 to Edward M. and Anna Agnes (Grosz) Gukeisen in Dimock, SD. She graduated from Parkston High School in 1944, helping raise her siblings and working several jobs until she married Henry Neuheisel on November 26, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston, SD.

Marie worked many jobs in her life: handling eggs, milking, waitressing, drug store clerk, grocery store clerk, and Plankinton Training School to name a few. They lived on a farm NE of Plankinton, SD until Henry’s passing in 1967. She then moved into Plankinton where Marie continued to work and raise her family.

She met Floyd Doering and on March 16, 1972, they were united in marriage at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plankinton. The family then moved North of Plankinton to Floyd’s farm. Marie continued to work at the Plankinton School in the kitchen and later as an aide. Through her work at school and daycare, she was “Grandma” to many kids.

Marie was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and belonged to several groups, some of which include: TOPS Club, VFW Auxiliary, and the Eight O’Clock Club. She enjoyed gardening and canning, walking, riding the four-wheeler to check cows and crops, raising chickens and many more hobbies while on the farm.

Marie was especially known for her apple cream pies, home-made chicken noodle soup, popcorn cakes and chocolate birthday cakes.

In 2004 Floyd passed away and Marie continued to live on the farm. In 2008, Marie became very ill due to a tick bite and later moved to an apartment in Plankinton. There she would join her friends for lunch at the Senior Citizens Center and go for coffee often. In July of 2011 Marie had a stroke and had been a resident of the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell, SD since then.

Grateful for having shared in Marie’s life, her three children and 10 grandchildren: son, John E. (Becky Lien) Neuheisel of Plankinton, SD and their children: Elliot (Erin) Neuheisel and Alicia (Charlie) Williams; daughter, Ann O. (Richard, Jr.) Schuman of White Lake, SD and their children: Jackie (Brandon) Stadler, Marie (Josh) Fehr, and Liza (Joel) Reinesch; and daughter, Jolene A. Johnson of Mount Vernon, SD and her children: Zach Johnson, Dillon Johnson, daughter-in-law, Amber Neuheisel, step children: Jesse (Sarah) Johnson and Jena (Kory) Kludt; 20 great grandchildren; a brother, Herbert Gukeisen; three sisters: Wilma Palmateer, Agnes “Peg” Hart and Barbara Nelson; along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by, her husbands: Henry Neuheisel (1967) and Floyd Doering (2004); her daughter, Debra M. Neuheisel (2012); grandson, Chris Neuheisel (2020); great grandson, Jaxson Dean Williams (2013); her parents, Edward and Anna Gukeisen; three brothers: William, Albert and Clarence Gukeisen; two sisters: Margaret Gehring and an infant sister (stillborn); many brothers and sisters-in-law; and a former son-in-law, Mike Johnson (2019).
