Obituary for Kenneth Earl "Ken" Sly

Kenneth Earl “Ken” Sly, 91, of Platte, SD passed away Friday, August 12, 2022 at Avera St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston, SD. A Memorial Mass is 10:30 AM Saturday, August 20, 2022 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Platte. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Kenneth Earl Sly was born on October 10, 1930, the youngest of four children to Earl H. and Lucy (Mills) Sly on their farm northeast of Platte, SD. He attended Carroll Township Elementary School and graduated from Platte High School in 1948. He went to work on the family farm for a year, then continued his education at Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD. After earning his Teaching Certificate during the summer, he taught rural school for one year and later enrolled at Yankton College.

In January of 1951, Ken enlisted in the US Air Force where he met his future wife, Bernice (Bea) Groth. They were united in marriage on April 16, 1952, at the chapel on Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, AL. After his honorable discharge in November of 1954, he returned to farming and they raised their four children: Daniel, Valerie, Lisa, and Bradley. In 1995 they retired and moved to Platte. After Bea passed away, Ken married Dera Cahill in June of 1997. Ken moved to Parkston in February 2019. 

Kenneth was active in local activities including: township board, local elevator, school board, Federal Land Bank Board of Directors, and Charles Mix County Zoning Commission, weed and water boards. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where he served as a church choir member, Eucharistic minister, and lector. He was also a member of American Legion Post #115 of Platte.

Ken was known for raising and selling purebred Charolais cattle. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, playing cards and board games.

Grateful for having shared in Ken’s life, his three children: Valerie (Ream) Lazaro of Las Vegas, NV, Lisa (Bill) Sprecher of Parkston, SD and Brad (Carrie) Sly of Platte, SD; six grandchildren; a step-grandchild; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Groth of Fort Morgan, CO; along with many nieces and nephews.

Ken was preceded in death by, his wives: Bea Sly (1996) and Dera Sly (2010); a son, Daniel Sly (1975); his parents, Earl and Lucy Sly; two sisters: Joy (Curt) Knudsen and Beth (Ralph) Chastka; a brother, Harry Sly; and a brother-in-law, Bob Groth.
